Urban Farming Community | South Phoenix

First-semester Master of Architecture studio | Fall 2025

A 2.5-acre inclusive urban farming community in South Phoenix designed for just about anyone—students, singles, young couples, empty-nesters, or small families—who wants affordable, connected, desert-appropriate living.

Eighteen single-story courtyard homes are woven into a low, continuous mat-building that prioritizes people, shade, and food over the car. Flexible unit types (studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom configurations) cluster around shared courtyards, edible gardens, and a central market hall, creating a walkable village where daily life naturally overlaps and relationships form.

Passive cooling strategies—thick insulated concrete walls, deep overhangs, cross-ventilation, and tree-shaded courtyards—keep the community comfortable year-round with almost no air conditioning. Rooftop solar, rainwater harvesting, and on-site food production make sustainability effortless rather than optional.

This is a place where everyone belongs: a quiet porch for the introvert, an open garden for the extrovert, and plenty of space in between. The architecture doesn’t prescribe a lifestyle—it simply removes barriers and invites life in.
